		<description>Nik Bärtsch Music Visualisations
I was commissioned to create two music visualisation animations for the documentary ‘Ingredients For Disaster’ about the musician Nik Bärtsch and his band Ronin. The film was directed by Julian Phillips. You can view the trailer here! The brief was to create visualisations which would illustrate the complex structures underlying the music. Detailed MIDI transcriptions were created to drive the animation and ensure tight synchronisation between the audio and visual elements. Below I’ve posted Modul 45 and Modul 35 plus some videos and images to illustrate the creative process.&#38;nbsp;

Modul 35


I worked closely with Alex Rigopulos who really helped me understand the intricate structures of the music and ensure every detail was relevant. For example each ‘wheel’ within the piece reflects the time signature of that element and the stems height represent the notes value. Hopefully helps the viewer visualise the interaction of the polyrhythms. 
Definitely check out Nik and Ronin, they really do create something singular. Here’s a link to them performing Modul 45. Thanks to Alex Rigopulos and Julian Phillips for getting me onboard and Mike Mandel, Rick Cody and Simon Rigopulos for their help! 




ProcessThe animation was created in Houdini and composited in After Effects. The audio was transcribed into MIDI and used to drive the animation in Houdini via the CHOPs network.&#38;nbsp;

This is a selection of my ongoing experiments in visualising sound. The first few are visualising bird song and the human voice then there’s some visualisations of music. It’s been interested to leverage LLM’s to help write code and develop new approaches to this problem. I was surprised at how much data I could extract from an audio file of a piece of dance music. Using LLM’s can also help me code bridges between different software which is something that would have been previously out of my grasp.&#38;nbsp;
These experiments were all realised in Houdini and rendered in Redshift

This project started as a continuation from my pen plots, where I created 3D structures from sound. I wanted to try and create an animated version of those structures and explore some ideas and techniques I’d be playing around with.&#38;nbsp;
Stash interviewed my about the piece, you can read more here.&#38;nbsp;
It was made mainly in Houdini and composited in After Effects. The font was created in Fontself, the audio done in Ableton and Premiere.&#38;nbsp;

I worked with Treatment Studio on the visuals for the Genesis live tour, The Last Domino? I worked on the track ‘Duchess’. We tried to echo the narrative described in the music, tracing the rise and fall of the ‘duchess’. Mostly it was created in Houdini using Open GL renders then composited in After Effects. These plots are from a system I’ve made which takes musical MIDI data and creates these images. It&#38;nbsp; creates thousands of variations of which I go through and choose my favourites.&#38;nbsp; The images in some ways reflect the aesthetic of the Bauhaus but the reference to Kandinsky is more a reference to the artists pursuit of a kind of ‘synesthetic’ artwork, a kind of visual music. The audio (12 Études, Opus 8 - Sofronitsky) I’ve used here is by a contemporary of Kandinsky, the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin. He too was an artist interested in synesthesia, mysticism and visual music.&#38;nbsp;

Below I created a variant of the system which takes the same data and creates an animation. Just for extra fun if you have the Artivive phone app, you can focus the camera on the artwork and it will create an AR version of the animation for you.&#38;nbsp;

This plot uses one continuous line that spirals outwards. As it does so it becomes increasingly effected by a noise field. This took the plotter 5 1/2 hours hours to create and travelled a distance of 167 metres.Sound Circles

This ‘sound circle’ is created using a very small snippet of audio. It’s really a 3D circular graphic equalizer.  This time the recording is from two people in a ritual using a tibetan singing bowl and throat singing.&#38;nbsp;Timelapse of Sound Circle

I sampled audio from Google’s ‘Pattern Radio: Whale Songs’ which uses “artificial intelligence model on their vast collection of underwater recordings” to enable you to navigate a vast archive. I visualised a small sample of the audio really just in an attempt to look at the sound from a new perspective.&#38;nbsp; This was another long plot, with about 200 metres of lines drawn over 4 hours.&#38;nbsp;Yantra

		<description>Bond: No Time To Die&#38;nbsp;
I worked with Territory Studio&#38;nbsp;to help develop ‘QDAR’ for the latest Bond film. QDAR is basically a form of three dimensional scanning similar to LIDAR: “The QDAR was one of the key story-telling elements for us to nail in the final action-packed sequence. Once deployed the QDAR maps the interior of Safin’s lair which creates a full visual of the entire facility that Q could then use to guide Bond.”

My role was to develop a technique to mimic a dynamic LIDAR system that could illuminate the villans lair. I was also responsible for the camera animation and rendering of the shots but not the GUI housing or final composite. &#38;nbsp;
